The anti-hero's appeal

   A new form of character has begun to appear in modern serializations. Whether we're talking about manga/anime, comic books, TV series or even video games, this new stereotype has made its way through all of them and has grown in popularity, with fans familiarizing themselves more with these types of characters. The one in word is of course the anti-hero.
   The anti-hero is someone who people know won't claim victory in the end. After all, this isn't his story, it's the protagonist's and more often than not, the anti-hero's role is to simply make them stronger or as a hurdle that they need to overcome. The anti-hero doesn't fight for "good", he fights for whatever reason he finds reasonable and doesn't care about anything or anyone else.
   The reason for the anti-hero's rise in appeal is that people are more fond of these types of characters due to the fact that their development is a lot of times far more interesting than that of even the over-used hero who surpasses all obstacles and goes on to do what needs to be done. The anti-hero will go through all forms of twists and turns, he might not even survive till the end of the story and can easily be used as a "sacrificial piece" by daring story-tellers in an attempt to cause a big reaction among their fans. And that's what makes it intriguing.
   The anti-hero, a lot of times, might even start off as an evil villain, as someone to be seen as a threat from the viewpoint of both the hero but also the audience themselves. But what's most interesting about this new type of character are the motives behind the actions.

   I find the manga Naruto a very good source of inspiration when it comes to this. During the end of first part of the story, titular character was taken out to train for three years under his master, with the looming threat of an evil organisation dubbed the Akatsuki (trn: "Red Moon") approaching ever closer over time. However, after fighting these supposed villains, Naruto and his comrades soon discover that each and every one of them have justifiable reasons of doing what they were doing. And the higher up they went in hierarchy, the more difficult it was to not actually side with these characters and even view them as villains at all anymore. It's no coincidence that every character from this organisation has his/her own fan base (except Zetsu, no one likes him).

   However, if we're going to talk about Naruto and anti-heroes, it would be criminal not to mention Sasuke Uchiha. A character that started the series as Naruto's best friend, then went on to murder his own brother, tried to start a killing spree of his own home, then decided he would save the world instead after realizing that he needed to grow up. His influence on Naruto and his own, personal journey throughout the series, from revenge, to anguish, to overcoming all that in order to find a solution to unify his world and then even beyond that to see the hand that Naruto was constantly extending toward him, was truly one for the ages. A trade-mark anti-hero, yet one that audiences always knew would survive.
   Speaking of anti-heroes and manga, the series that pretty much created the archetype was that of Dragon Ball, as there were so many characters that fit that role, it's hard to keep count: Yamcha, Tienshinhan, Piccolo, even Frieza is beginning to look like one these days. But to no other does it seem to suit better than the Prince of all Saiyans, Vegeta. In fact, it seems like he was born to play the part, as he was originally introduced as an enemy to protagonist Goku (or "Kakarot", as Vegeta himself prefers to call him) and was sent to Earth originally to conquer it, although he also tried to destroy it after "Kakarot" put up too much of a fight. Vegeta then had to bare witness to a humble, lower class Saiyan surpass him in power and defeat Frieza, the one that had enslaved his race, killed his own father and destroyed his home planet. Vegeta trained night after day in order to prove his superiority over Goku and set things right within his own mind, however other things kept getting in the way and eventually Goku gave his own life to save Earth, leaving Vegeta with a feeling of emptiness. In the following seven years, the Saiyan prince tried to find out the source of Goku's power, thinking it might even be the desire to protect his loved ones, so he had his own little family yet nothing changed. Eventually the proud Saiyan did get his rematch but nothing had changed, as Goku hid the lion's share of his power from him in order to spare him from the shame of defeat, leaving Vegeta bitter and angry. After a while, Vegeta managed to catch up to Goku in terms of strength, yet he seemed to have calmed down quite a lot from the first day he set his foot on Earth, due to the influence of his family (he even told his son Trunks that he was proud of him and had a second child) and not seem so fixated on his Saiyan pride anymore. Instead, he would appear more willing to fight and risk his own well-being for someone besides himself, showing a complete shift in his character. Vegeta is a stereotype anti-hero, one that shows just how much these types of characters can impact the overall story.
   There have been others, such as Uryuu Ishida from Bleach, who was from the opposite faction than the main character (thought he) was. More specifically, as Ichigo Kurosaki was (thought to be) a Soul Reaper, Uryu Ishida was a Quincy; one's job was to cleanse a hollow and maintain the balance of souls, the other's was to completely annihilate them from existence. The two were actually classmates yet considered each other rivals, although nothing too severe. Yet during the manga's final arc, "The 1000 Year War", where the Quincies declared war on the Soul Reapers, Uryu sides with his fellow Quincies and fights with Ichigo, leaving the main character to ponder the reasons behind his former friend's actions. However in the end it is revealed that all this was nothing but a ploy and the two join forces to defeat the main antagonist and Quincy leader, Juha Bach.

   Another great source for anti-heroes is Fairy Tail, as quite a few characters that fit the role can be found here as well. First and foremost is Gray Fullbuster, who plays off nicely with main character, Natsu Dragneel, as one is an ice wizard and the other breathes fire. However, Gray's story is much deeper than that. Having lost both his parents due to an attack of a demon in his hometown, Gray goes down the path of revenge. Eventually, as he looks for a place to go, he stumbles on to a woman and a child. The woman, who's name is Ur, decides to take him in and teach him the ice magic that he masters later on down the line. However, during the course of his training, Gray finds out that the demon that destroyed his village is rampaging somewhere nearby and even though he is not ready, decides to go after it. Having heard this, Ur rushes to save him and is eventually forced into using a forbidden spell called "Iced Shell" that uses her own life force to encapsulate the demon in ice. Gray is left mortified and alone once again. He eventually stumbles at the gates of the Fairy Tail guild, where he overcomes his grief through the help of the many new friends he makes. And through the numerous adventures he and his guildmates go through, he discovers Ur has a daughter called Ultear, he reconnects with the demon that Ur trapped in ice and he even meets with the father he thought was dead.

    Another great anti-hero from Fairy Tail is Gajeel Redfox, who's first appearance in the anime resembles a bit that of Vegeta, as he tries to destroy the guild and kidnap Lucy, one of the protagonists, but is stopped by Natsu. The connecting element between the two and one that made Gajeel even more appealing to fans is that they're both dragon slayers. In a shocking turn of events, Gajeel decides to join the same guild he tried to destroy and atones for his sins, letting Laxus take out his frustration on him without fighting back, and even becomes one of the toughest fighters of the guild. But apart from an ongoing relationship with Levy McGarden that helps smooth his character and a few power-ups here and there, not much else is offered in terms of development.

   Finally, two other characters that have showed up more recently and put on the anti-hero suit are My Hero Academeia's Shoto Todoroki and Katsuki Bakugo. The former comes from a broken home, as he was born as an experiment, when his father, Endeavor, who possesses the strongest fire quirk had multiple children with his mother, who had an ice quirk, in order to create a perfect being who had both and would become the number one hero. Shoto was that being but his birth led to his mother being isolated and for that, he despises his father and wants nothing to do with him. Bakugo on the other hand just seems like he's got a bad temper from the start of the show. Childhood friends with main protagonist, Izuku "Deku" Midoriya, he constantly belittles him, telling him there's no reason for him to sign up to the Hero Academy. Izuku's sudden string of successes frustrate Bakugo to no end and his easily angered character is seen as something exploitable by the actual villains of the series, who kidnap him and try to convince him to join them. However, in a surprising turn of events, Bakugo pretty much tells them to shove it, pointing out that he is a stern admirer of number one hero All Might and wants nothing more than to be just like him some day. The progress and evolution of both these characters and how they will play off Izuku is something worth paying close attention to.

   And one from another industry. With Kingdom Hearts 3 so close to release, it felt appropriate to mention Riku, who was always the dark to main protagonist Sora's light. The two have fundamentally different stories, however their paths always lead to the same end. Riku's power usually stems from the darkness and even though he was the main antagonist in the first game of the series, down the road he even became a playable character, as he tried to learn how to control that power and eventually grow above it, becoming a keyblade master and leaving his past behind. There was even a time when Riku rescued Sora. At the start of Kingdom Hearts 3, Riku is considered to be a stronger character than Sora.
   Those are but a few anti-heroes that can be named. There are a ton of others, some don't even survive yet still have compelling enough story lines that leave them adored by fans even more than the protagonists. Such is the connection that people feel to a character that can make mistakes, is left vulnerable and can change in every way possible (either good, bad, or morally gray) throughout the story. Because yeah, heroes are good, but anti-heroes? That's where all of us are.

A day @ MadFest

   It was my first major convention in Australia, and it didn't disappoint. I'm talking of course about the Madman Anime Convention (or simply MadFest, for short) that was held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre downtown. A lot of cosplayers from a variety of anime showed up and there were some truly impressive costumes that really stood out, like a guy that was dressed as Cell's imperfect form from Dragon Ball Z or another one who had a complete Red Ranger outfit from the Power Rangers.

   One of the main reasons I even bought a ticket at all was the fact that Christopher Sabat was going to be attending the show this year. Sabat is a veteran voice actor who has given life to many different characters like Elfman from Fairy Tail, All Might from the ever-growing in popularity My Hero Academeia or Zoro from One Piece. Of course, everyone from my generation (including me of course) mainly recognize Sabat as the "Prince of all Saiyans", Vegeta from Dragon Ball.
   Sabat's panel was very fun, he seemed like a great guy and the one-and-a-half hour just flew by. I wish I could've gotten an autograph or a picture with him or maybe he could've interacted some more with the audience, but even like this, it was fine.
   Apart from everything anime, there were also video games at MadFest and quite a few interesting ones as well. I tried my hand on some and made my impressions on them. Starting of course with the genre-reshaping Octopath Traveler from Square Enix, that is only available in the Switch. This game seems to take all the stereotypes that we have about Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPG) and throw them out the window, letting you battle non-playable characters, attack with different weapons during battle and even throws difficult challenges your way from the word "go". No matter how much of a veteran you think you are at JRPG's, nothing is as it should be in this game, which is awesome in my opinion, plus it comes with a great story. The first hour or so I played as Olberic Eisenberg just made me want to delve deeper into his story.

A series of Kingdom Hearts novels by director Tetsuya Nomura

   Next on the list was Jump Force, a game that I wasn't expecting to see. Of course the new announcement that Yugi Muto from the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise would be included in the game further invigorated interest and the lines to try out the game were quite long. From the small feel I got of it, it's a little similar to the Naruto Storm saga in terms of game play, with two replacement characters available for you to choose from and ultimate attacks and "awakenings" of sorts (Susano'o for Sasuke, Super Saiyan for Vegeta and Ichigo's final Bankai form from when he fought with Juha Bach were the ones I saw). It's incredibly fast, the graphics are really detailed, bringing the anime characters into the real world and the stages are awesome (the variety here is strange, taking players from New York to planet Namek). I just wonder how they're gonna dub all these characters, it'll be weird for example if Vegeta fights Zoro and it's all just Chris Sabat.
   I also tried out another JRPG that was recently released, Dragon Quest XI. I hadn't given it much thought at first, but now this is definitely on my list. It's quick for its genre, the battle system seems to have great depth, letting you develop each character however you see fit, the story is captivating, enemies are visible on the map so you can avoid random battles all together if you want (which is something I loathe in these types of games) and you can see all different locations as you move along in the world (for example, I was looking for a castle and I saw it in the distance as I headed north). This place seems believable, it feels like an actual world and I got drawn into it immediately. The character designs by Akira Toriyama (the one behind Dragon Ball) are also something that work in its favour. I'm getting this.
   Finally, and I'm very happy about this, I got the chance to play a game that many people have been waiting for for a long, long time: Devil May Cry V. I'm excited to say that it plays smoothly, the battle system is awesome, thrilling, fast and vivid, you can very easily string together a combo and knockdown enemies. Of course, Johnny Young Bosch as Nero, the main character, is a huge bonus for this title as he really gives him this "too cool for school" attitude. I didn't get much time with it, so maybe I didn't really have the opportunity to look into it, however I sincerely hope there's a bit more variety to the battles because even though it looks good, after a while, it got a little tiresome and repetitive. Also, the difficulty level spiked all of a sudden; from fighting little bug-like creatures to a building-sized goliath, I had no idea how to handle him. I look forward to hearing more about this title in the future and trying it out again if I have the chance.
   All in all, it was a great day full of games and anime and I look forward to many more to come in the future. Stay crazy MadFest!

Άλλη μια μέρα που ξεκινάνε όλοι το καθημερινό εγερτήριο. Όλοι στη στάση του τρένου. Γνωστές φυσιογνωμίες πλέον που ωστόσο κανένας δεν γνωρίζει τον άλλον κι ούτε φυσικά τολμάει να μιλήσει στον άλλον, εκτός κι αν παραστεί ανάγκη. Ποιος άλλωστε θα ήθελε να στιγματιστεί ως «περίεργος» ή, ακόμα χειρότερα, «ανώμαλος», που μιλάει σε αγνώστους και τους διαταράσσει τη καθημερινή τους λειτουργία;

  Αν όλα αυτά λαμβάνουν χώρα στην (δεύτερη, πλέον) «πιο βιώσιμη πόλη του κόσμου», με ανθρώπους να πηγαινοέρχονται καθημερινά σαν τα ρομπότ χωρίς ίχνος συναισθήματος στο πρόσωπό τους, τότε αβίαστα γεννάται το ερώτημα: τι γίνεται σε άλλα μέρη, λιγότερο βιώσιμα; Έχουμε μήπως ξεχάσει να χαμογελάμε εξαιτίας των υπερβολικών υποχρεώσεων, έχουμε γίνει ίσως υπερβολικά καχύποπτοι λόγω όλων εκείνων με τα οποία μας βομβαρδίζουν καθημερινά τα Μέσα Ενημέρωσης; Ποια είναι η αιτία που οδηγεί σε αυτή την απομόνωση;

   Την αρχή έκαναν οι καταστροφικές πυρκαγιές, των οποίων τα θύματα ακόμη μετριούνται. Κατά τη διάρκεια της επιδρομής της φωτιάς, που δεν άφησε τίποτα στο πέρασμά της, φάνηκε το πόσο απροετοίμαστοι πιάστηκαν όλοι, με ορισμένους να αντιμετωπίζουν τον κίνδυνο με ένα βαθμό υπεροψίας. Από τις αρμόδιες αρχές, που δεν γνώριζαν προς τα που να κατευθύνουν τους ανθρώπους, στέλνοντάς τους πίσω προς τα καμμένα, μέχρι τους ίδιους τους κατοίκους, οι οποίοι αντιμετώπιζαν το όλο θέμα με έναν απίστευτο "άερα" του στυλ "έλα μωρέ, εδώ θα'ρθει να κάψει";
   Εφ' όσων λοιπόν, δεν υπάρχει κράτος και κάθε καλοκαίρι επαναλαμβάνεται η ίδια ιστορία, δεν θα έπρεπε οι ίδιοι οι άνθρωποι να λαμβάνουν τα μέτρα τους; Ο καθένας ξεχωριστά; Μια απλή απορία είναι. Αφού βλέπεις και ξέρεις ότι δεν μπορείς να περιμένεις τίποτα κι από κανέναν, γιατί δεν φροντίζεις εσύ ο ίδιος τουλάχιστον να έχεις λάβει μέτρα κατά της φωτιάς, να διατηρήσεις καθαρή την αυλή σου από ξερά κλαδιά και σκουπίδια (ειδικά τώρα που καίει ο ήλιος και είναι επικίνδυνη περίοδος) ή στη χειρότερη να έχεις μια γρήγορη μέθοδο διαφυγής σε περίπτωση που συμβεί το χειρότερο;
   Ναι, δεν υπάρχει κράτος και αν κάποιος πει ότι ο Τσίπρας κι ο κάθε Τσίπρας βρίσκονται στην εξουσία μόνο για να τα τρώνε, θα του πω πως "συμφωνώ κι επαυξάνω", αλλά μήπως αυτό είναι το μόνο εύκολο στην τελική; Μήπως είναι απλή πανάκειος το να τα ρίχνουμε όλα εκεί και να ζητάμε μια κεφαλή επί πίνακι, λες κι έτσι θα διορθωθούν όλα τα κακώς κείμενα;
   Μήπως αντί να ζητάμε ανάληψη ευθυνών αριστερά και δεξιά, να κοιτούσαμε λίγο πιο κοντά; Τι μπορούσε να κάνει ο καθένας ξεχωριστά για την αποτροπή αυτής της τραγωδίας; Αντί να κάνουμε λεονταρισμούς στα φέισμουκ και τα τουίτερ, δε θα ήταν πιο εποικοδομητικό να οργανωθούν μικρές ομάδες αρχικά, οικογένειες, ένοικοι πολυκατοικιών, δήμοι, κοινότητες, ή ξέρω γω τι άλλο, να κοιτάξουν τι έφταιξε τώρα και να το φτιάξουν πρωτού ξανασυμβεί;
   Λίγο μετά τις πυρκαγιές, έσκασαν πλυμμήρες. Σε εικόνες που βλέπω, η Μεσογείων θυμίζει περισσότερο τον... Έβρο! Γιατί σε έναν από τους πλουσιότερους δήμους της Ελλάδας (Αμαρουσίου) δεν έχουν παρθεί μέτρα από τους ίδιους τους κατοίκους; Μήπως στη τελική είμαστε κι εμείς οι ίδιοι ένοχοι ως... βολεμένοι; Καλομαθημένοι από μιαν άλλη εποχή που όλα κυλούσαν ομαλά χωρίς εμείς να χρειάζεται να κάνουμε πολλά-πολλά;

Impressions from the FIFA World Cup 2018

  Yet another World Cup has come and gone. With its ups and downs, this competition has now gone into the annals of history. Unfortunately, I must say that this World Cup leaves me personally with a bitter taste in my mouth for a number of reasons. Despite that, however, I would be remiss not to mention the high number of goals scored (169, with an average of 2.6 per game and only one goalless draw between France and Denmark) that helped provide us with entertainment and plenty of suspense throughout this last month.
   But let's take things one at a time. First topic of discussion would be the debut of the Video Assistant Referee (more commonly known as VAR) at this World Cup. It appeared, only to prove that it does not work. Of course, there are those players that might try to take advantage of the referee's bad point of view, to which end yes, VAR might prove helpful, but as a general rule it doesn't really make a difference. Because at the end of the day, no matter how much technology is introduced to the world of football, it is still up to the individual to make the call. Case in point, the final between France and Croatia, where Perisic's supposed handball gave France the lead. After checking with the VAR, the referee decided to award France the penalty, yet the overwhelming majority on social media claimed that the decision was unjust and unfair for Croatia.

   Something else that left a bit of a bad impression at the 2018 World Cup was the disappointing performance of some of the greater teams. And if for Spain it was a little expected -considering their former head coach's Julen Lopetegui's decision to abandon his nation a few days before the start of the tournament-, it came completely out of right field for some others, such as Germany (who fell victim to the "winning nation" curse), Portugal and Argentina. Struggling against sub-par opponents, eventually being disqualified very early on, this was not what we expected from the representatives of these nations. Combined with the absence of Italy, Chile and the Netherlands, and also the fact that such an event occurs for a second consecutive time right after the European Championship of 2016, it might just go to show that the so-called top quality players are being a bit too overexerted with continuous games and responsibilities for clubs and nations. The players of other nations didn't have as many games on their feet and were able to apply pressure for longer periods of time (case in point: Germany vs. South Korea).
   On the other hand, we saw teams get very far in this tournament that under different circumstances, shouldn't have. And at this point, I can't but mention the incredibly narcissistic England who, for some reason have come to believe that the World Cup did at some stage call their country home for it to be "coming back". Gareth Southgate's men (who seemed to be the only one in comprehension of the reality of the situation), after barely scraping a win from Tunisia in their first game, got a comfortable victory over the tourists of Panama in the second, then decided to lose to Belgium's B' team in order to avoid clashing with Brazil in the knockout stages. Instead, they met up with the tragic Colombia (whoever saw their game against Senegal knows what I mean), had to take them to penalties to advance, then got through Sweden admittedly relatively comfortably, only for them to meet up with their first real challenge in the face of Croatia once they had already reached the semis. If England were any luckier, they would've met with Japan in the final! They showed absolutely no improvement in this tournament, just a series of flukes.

   Unfortunately, to speak a bit about the winners, the Cup ended up in the hands of the team with the most realism. Not the one that played the most attractive football (Brazil), not the one that scored the most goals (Belgium), not even the one with the best defense (Croatia). But to the team that did what was necessary to get results. Leave no gaps in defense, apply the pressure in midfield, leave the ball to the opposition and hit them on the counter-attack thanks to possibly the fastest forward of the whole tournament (Mpappe). France did that. Realistic to the core, each player knew exactly what was required of them on the pitch. They gave the sense at times that they could even go down to Australia, yet not even the likes of Belgium could break them down. The style of football that Didier Deschamps has instilled into his team is quite reminiscent of that which helped Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid reach two UEFA Champions League finals. However there they met with Real Madrid. There's no such team on national level.
   A lot of speculation went around if Russia was even going to be ready to host this World Cup, considering they were missing some of the deadlines to deliver their stadiums to FIFA's organizational committee. But in my opinion, I feel the world owes a standing ovation to the hosts, as they held a magnificent competition with grand venues and perfect pitches that helped the players in their efforts. In addition, the weather was pleasantly nice for a country like Russia, since in all the games I personally watched, I only remember it raining once, something very rare for cities like Samara, Gdansk or Sankt Peterburg.
   The next World Cup will be held in Qatar during the summer of 2022. It will be very interesting to see how FIFA will cope with hosting such a tournament in the middle of the championship season for Europe. But until then, we have four whole years...

My Hero No-Can-Do-Meia?!

   Recently a new Shonen anime seems to have taken the world by storm. It is called My Hero Academeia (or Boku No Hero Academeia, for those that prefer Japanese) and it tells the story of young Izuku Midoriya (or Deku, according to his friends) who lives in a world full of superheroes yet doesn't possess a power of his own. That is until, one day, the world's greatest superhero called All Might (think Superman, but more blonde) passes his own power down to young Deku. Deku then enrolls into the world's greatest school for superheroes, timely dubbed Hero Academeia, and from then on the plot unfolds.
   Personally, as much as I've tried, I can't seem to get into this particular anime for a number of reasons. The first of them being that it has too many common elements with other anime, more specifically the Naruto franchise. A good-for-nothing protagonist? Check! An over-reactive rival? Check! A type of school environment in which the protagonist and the rest of his friends grow up in? Check! An exam during which a whole bunch of OP villains attack, forcing the grown-up, stronger heroes to demonstrate the powers that the protagonist will eventually have? Check! A character with family issues? Check! Having so many similarities with Naruto, it's hard not to think "I've seen it all before" while watching My Hero Academeia.
   Yet another reason that I can't develop a deep level of immersion into MHA, as opposed to other anime such as Dragon Ball Super or even Fairy Tail, is due to the level of urgency that seems to be missing from its world. The superheroes all seem to be extremely overpowered, to the point of being able to obliterate any obvious threat. The strongest hero, All Might, is capable of crushing any enemy with minimum effort and even the strongest of enemies, Shigaraki Tomura and All For One, don't really seem that much of a threat. Their motives are extremely minor (they want to show the world that All Might is not the hero they think he is, thereby throwing it into a state of chaos) and don't really seem to lead anywhere for them personally. F.e., Madara Uchiha wished to end all conflict in the world by removing all chakra and placing all shinobi under a dream against their will. Vegeta wanted to obtain the Dragon Balls, become immortal and blow the Earth to smithereens. You can see the difference in the motivation and threat level in one sentence alone.
   The final factor is I think the overabundance of Shonen anime. For us, the older generation that grew up watching Dragon Ball Z, I believe at some point it's just the same story being told by different people. Usual underdog trains hard, has a lot of enemies, battles them, some become his friends, he trains even harder, some hidden scheme becomes revealed along the way, main character ends up having to fight to save the world, main character defeats final villain even though he dies 2-3 times trying to do so, and they all live happily ever after. My Hero Academeia does absolutely nothing to differentiate itself from this same trope. As a matter of fact, it sticks so hard to this routine-ish script that as already pointed out earlier, it's hard to tell the difference between it and Naruto anymore. Deku is just a mixture between Naruto himself and Rock Lee at this point.
   So those are the reasons why I cannot and more than likely will not ever get behind the whole My Hero Academeia hype. Now, don't get me wrong, I watch it, I enjoy it, but I don't get the same rise out of it as I do with even Boruto. Cause at this point I have an attachment to the characters that are in Boruto, I'm interested to see what goes on in their lives. My Hero Academeia is just a carbon copy and it'll have to do a lot to gain my attention properly!
